3.5mm M/M AUX Cable

The 3.5mm male-to-male AUX cable is one of those unglamorous items that quietly keeps a production running. It carries stereo audio between any two devices with 3.5mm jacks: phones, laptops, mixers, speakers, monitors, cameras, and playback rigs. Every sound bag, DIT cart, and production office should have more of these than seems reasonable, because they are always in use somewhere.

On set, AUX cables handle the everyday audio plumbing. Playback operators run them from a phone or laptop into a powered speaker for on-set music and cue playback. Sound mixers use them to feed scratch audio, send a headphone tap to a client, or link consumer devices into the cart. Video village uses them to get program audio from a monitor or receiver into headphones or a small speaker so agency and clients can hear takes. DITs and editors working on location run them between laptops and speakers for reviewing dailies. Because the 3.5mm TRS connector is the universal consumer audio standard, this is the cable that bridges the professional package and the everyday devices that always end up part of the workflow, and having a spare on hand is the difference between rolling and waiting.

Cables like this get borrowed, kinked, and left in location walls, which is why they belong on the expendables order rather than the prayer list. Buy a couple and stash them where the last one disappeared from.
