Red gaffer tape is the set's built-in warning system. This one-inch roll of matte cloth gaff gives electricians, grips, and safety-minded ADs a fast way to mark anything hot, live, fragile, or off-limits, in a color that every crew member is conditioned to notice before they touch. It is the same professional-grade cloth tape you know, in the color that means stop and think.
Electricians band red gaff around the feeder that is energized, the stinger that feeds video village, and the dimmer channel that must stay up. Grips flag the knuckle that is carrying weight, the leg of a combo stand at the edge of a platform, and the pull-line that is under tension. Red is also the backbone of many department color-code systems: give electric red, grip another color, camera a third, and every coiled cable in the staging area sorts itself by eye. Because it is real cloth gaff rather than paper, it also works as tape, securing cable, hinging foamcore, and making field repairs when the nearest matching color happens to be the right one for the job.
The matte finish keeps red marks from flaring under lights, the backing tears cleanly by hand into flags and bands, and the rubber-based adhesive grips hard all day yet strips off without leaving residue on cable jackets or painted steel.
