Red spike tape is a cornerstone of the standard marking palette used by stage managers, first ACs, and dolly grips everywhere. This half-inch cloth tape lays down crisp, highly visible position marks on stage floors, marley, and location hardwood, and its red color carries two jobs at once: it is a primary color in any actor-coding system, and it doubles as the natural choice for marks that mean stop or danger.
In a color-coded blocking system, each principal gets a color, and red is almost always in the first round of assignments because it reads so clearly against both dark stage floors and pale location flooring. Lay a red T at your lead's one, a red toe mark at their two, and the camera and dolly teams can track that actor's whole path across the scene at a glance. Red spike also excels at limit marks: the last safe inch of a dolly move, the downstage edge an actor must not cross for focus, the point where a moving set piece has to stop. When the mark itself is a warning, red says so.
The half-inch width keeps marks small enough to hide from low and wide lenses, the cloth backing tears by hand into precise Ls, Ts, and arrows, and the adhesive pulls up cleanly at wrap without ghosting the floor.
