Its Super35 8.3MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV III processor deliver Canon's color and roughly 12 stops of dynamic range through Canon Log, recording 1080 Full HD in the broadcast-friendly Canon XF codec, MPEG-2 at 4:2:2 and 50 Mbps, to dual CF cards. A built-in ND filter with clear, 2, 4, and 6-stop settings, an ISO range from 320 to 20,000, and two XLR inputs with phantom power make it a self-contained package for interviews and factual work.

The camera uses the Canon EF mount, accepting EF, EF-S, and Cinema lenses, and a PL version is available for cine glass. Focus is manual, in keeping with its era, so it pairs well with a monitor and a focus puller or careful solo operation. Monitoring is handled by a 0.52-inch EVF and a detachable 4-inch LCD, and at around 1,430 grams the body stays light for handheld use. This is the original HD C300; the Mark II and Mark III add 4K.
